Why the Glass Exists

From time to time, glazing is rejected during our quality control process for minor cosmetic reasons. The glass is structurally sound, safe and performs exactly as intended — it simply falls outside our visual tolerance standards. Rather than discarding it, we manufacture bespoke EOS rooflights around the available glass sizes.

Prices shown are for fixed or walk-on units, and exclude VAT and delivery. Most sizes can be upgraded with upstands, black banding, or Ritec Easy Clean. We can also adapt many of these into flat or pitched rooflights — just speak to our team with your requirements and we’ll confirm what’s possible.

To address the project’s unique requirements, EOS engineered and supplied a thermally broken, double-door roof access hatch designed for seamless integration into the building. The hatch was designed with a 24V DC actuator for automatic operation, ensuring effortless opening and compliance with escape access regulations. Due to its significant size, the hatch was divided into two equal sections of 3225mm by 1280mm, allowing for better weight distribution while maintaining a clean and unobtrusive design.

The access hatch featured a 50mm Polyisocyanurate insulation core within both the lid and upstand, achieving a U-value of 0.43 W/m²K, significantly improving the building’s thermal performance. The 300mm high insulated upstand was fitted with an aluminium curb liner, making it ideal for compatibility with the building’s hot-applied weatherproofing system. The unit was finished in D2525 Bronze PPC, providing a high-end aesthetic that complemented the newly refurbished façade.

Due to the size and weight of the unit, EOS coordinated with Forcia to have the access hatch craned onto the roof for installation. Precision planning was essential to ensure a smooth and safe lifting process, minimising disruption to site operations. EOS also carried out the full installation, ensuring that the hatch was fitted to exact specifications and fully integrated with the control panel, which allowed it to be connected to the building’s fire alarm system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the glass safe?

Yes. Glass included in the EOS Glass Recovery Initiative has been rejected for cosmetic reasons only. It is structurally sound and performs exactly as specified for safety, thermal performance and weather resistance. Only minor visual imperfections may be present.

What kind of imperfections should I expect?

Imperfections are cosmetic and can vary from unit to unit. These may include small inclusions, light surface marks, roller wave or minor edge blemishes. They do not affect the strength, safety or performance of the rooflight.

Can I return it if I don’t like the appearance?

No. Before manufacture, we will select the glass and provide photos or videos, clearly describing any visible imperfections. You are also welcome to visit our factory to inspect the glass in person.

Once the rooflight has been manufactured, it is bespoke to you and cannot be returned based on appearance.

Is there a warranty?

Yes. Structural performance, weather resistance and safety are covered as with our standard rooflight systems. Cosmetic appearance is excluded from warranty due to the nature of recovered glazing.

What is the lead time for these units?

Because the glass is already available, lead times are typically shorter than our fully bespoke rooflights.
Lead time depends on the rooflight system selected and current factory workload, but is usually between 1 and 6 weeks.

Can I get opening or pitched skylights?

Yes. Where the glass is suitable, recovered glass can be used in flat fixed, flat opening, or pitched skylights, often with similar savings. In some cases, we may also be able to create modular rooflights using multiple units of the same size.
