What To Consider When Purchasing A Flat Rooflight

Are flat roof skylights right for you?

The first decision you will need to make is whether a flat rooflight is right for your home. Here are a few of the reasons why our customers decide to install our units:

  • To save money on their electricity bills by letting more natural light into a space, without losing any heat
  • To allow more light flow across floors by mounting glass panes internally
  • To add a more modern and contemporary look to the room – the extra light often makes an area look much more spacious
  • To introduce more air flow ventilation into a building

So how do they work?

Rooflights are installed into the roof structure, and as such are built to insulate and otherwise protect your house from the elements.

All of our frames are made of strong and durable aluminium and are powder coated to withstand poor weather and prevent water pooling.

As water can potentially cause a big problem for rooflights, we’ve also ensured that the frame finishes at the same level of the glass so it will simply slide off the side.

Our units have all been tested, and passed with flying colours for water and air tightness, so there’s no need to worry about air loss or leaking.

To prevent any UV damage to the internal fittings in the rare moments of British sunshine, our frames have a silk band around the internal pane.

Like peace and quiet? Us too. Each of our units are also sound insulated – we’ve tested this as well, and we know you’ll be pleased with the results.

How are they structured?

You will see in our presentation above that all of our products are structured as followed:

Outer Glass Pane: Depending on your unit, this will be either double or triple glazed. Double glazed still delivers excellent performance, but for extra eco-friendliness, triple glazed will work even harder for you.

Inner Laminated Glass Panel: We are one of the only companies in the UK that provide a laminated inner pane as standard – that means no extra cost for extra protection. Laminated glass won’t shatter into tiny pieces, so inside your residence is safe too.

Internal and External Frames: Designed and built to not only look great, but also to add additional strength.

Cavity: This is the space between the glass. The gap is injected with argon or krypton gas which maximises energy efficiency.

Upstand: The upstand is the frame that the skylight sits on and will secure your unit as well as ensure it is in line with building regulations. We can provide insulated upstands which satisfy these requirements should you not wish to construct your own.

So how do they work?

It is highly unlikely that any regulations would restrict the installation of a flat roof skylight.

The only limitations you would possibly come across are:

  • If the proposed installation takes up a particularly large area of your roof. It needs to comply with a ‘reasonable size’ – otherwise it’s probably a greenhouse you’re after!
  • You happen to live in a Listed building or designated area, where any building work needs to be applied for.
  • Current regulations state that your rooflight should be pitched at least 150mm above your existing roof level

How do I know which one is right for me?

Before choosing the right skylight, you need to consider its main use.

Our rooflights from EOS look stunning and 'make' our room. Our extension is flooded with light. The electric one functions really well. We couldn't fault the service from EOS. They were so helpful, especially as we needed a bespoke size rooflight. I did a lot of research into which rooflights to buy and EOS were the most cost-effective by far, and theirs is a quality product. Thanks to the entire team at EOS. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend you.

ordered 1m x 1.5m flat fixed skylight. Very heavy due to extra thick glass. Had to hire an SLA10 Material hoist to be safely lifted onto garage roof but cost was low for a day hire. Now installed looks great. Needs at least two strong adults to lift out of delivery van. Would have been better if delivery van supplied with equipment to offload. Easy to order via website pdf doc dimensions and installation instructions all good and customer service friendly and helpful and informative. Happy to recommend.

This is the second time I have purchased a 2 x 1 mt. non-opening rooflight from EOS. They are extremely well made and use much thicker glass than many other manufacturers. They were recommended to me by a high end door and glass systems company. If you need a rooflight I don't think you will find better than EOS. I am delighted with my purchases.

as the installers we thought the product well manufactured , expensive , no ventilation , the customer loved it , that's important , installers need to have installation tool box talk.

EOS were excellent to deal with and very good at communicating about their products. I ordered three 1500 x 1000mm roof lights and two 600 x 600mm. The quality is fantastic and my new kitchen now looks amazing. The roof lights make a huge difference and bring in a huge amount off light. Also having one that opens via the electric control panel is a great feature on hot days. Paul. Ealing W5

I am a managing director of a London based design and build company and we use Eos roof lights on many of our projects. I have just put 2 electric opening 2m x 1m roof windows in my own home. I see many roof windows in my line of work and in my opinion Eos roof lights represent excellent quality and value for money.
