What To Consider When Purchasing A Flat Rooflight

Are flat roof skylights right for you?

The first decision you will need to make is whether a flat rooflight is right for your home. Here are a few of the reasons why our customers decide to install our units:

  • To save money on their electricity bills by letting more natural light into a space, without losing any heat
  • To allow more light flow across floors by mounting glass panes internally
  • To add a more modern and contemporary look to the room – the extra light often makes an area look much more spacious
  • To introduce more air flow ventilation into a building

So how do they work?

Rooflights are installed into the roof structure, and as such are built to insulate and otherwise protect your house from the elements.

All of our frames are made of strong and durable aluminium and are powder coated to withstand poor weather and prevent water pooling.

As water can potentially cause a big problem for rooflights, we’ve also ensured that the frame finishes at the same level of the glass so it will simply slide off the side.

Our units have all been tested, and passed with flying colours for water and air tightness, so there’s no need to worry about air loss or leaking.

To prevent any UV damage to the internal fittings in the rare moments of British sunshine, our frames have a silk band around the internal pane.

Like peace and quiet? Us too. Each of our units are also sound insulated – we’ve tested this as well, and we know you’ll be pleased with the results.

How are they structured?

You will see in our presentation above that all of our products are structured as followed:

Outer Glass Pane: Depending on your unit, this will be either double or triple glazed. Double glazed still delivers excellent performance, but for extra eco-friendliness, triple glazed will work even harder for you.

Inner Laminated Glass Panel: We are one of the only companies in the UK that provide a laminated inner pane as standard – that means no extra cost for extra protection. Laminated glass won’t shatter into tiny pieces, so inside your residence is safe too.

Internal and External Frames: Designed and built to not only look great, but also to add additional strength.

Cavity: This is the space between the glass. The gap is injected with argon or krypton gas which maximises energy efficiency.

Upstand: The upstand is the frame that the skylight sits on and will secure your unit as well as ensure it is in line with building regulations. We can provide insulated upstands which satisfy these requirements should you not wish to construct your own.

So how do they work?

It is highly unlikely that any regulations would restrict the installation of a flat roof skylight.

The only limitations you would possibly come across are:

  • If the proposed installation takes up a particularly large area of your roof. It needs to comply with a ‘reasonable size’ – otherwise it’s probably a greenhouse you’re after!
  • You happen to live in a Listed building or designated area, where any building work needs to be applied for.
  • Current regulations state that your rooflight should be pitched at least 150mm above your existing roof level

How do I know which one is right for me?

Before choosing the right skylight, you need to consider its main use.

Let’s take a look at our 4 products and the reasons why they’ll work for you:

We have had several eos rooflights (possible 10-12) over the last 5-6 years. Every one has been as it should be. Received in perfect condition, delivered on time. And the roof-lights are well made and look perfect once fitted. Company is also very helpful if help is required. I’ve seen cheaper alternatives supplied and fitted by others but they are inferior quality. These are

EOS Rooflights were knowledgable in their field, very helpful and the products (Roof Lantern and Flat glass roof lights) were of a good quality. The Roof lights were easily installed and full installation instructions were supplied for those who are installing for the first time. Would recommend.

Very efficient with processing my order and delivery. I ordered a 3M roof lantern and a smaller flat roof light. Both were simple to install on my own upstands and they both look great. My only negative was the cost was a lot for what they are but I don’t think eos are excessively expensive, I think the roof lanterns themselves are what’s pricey. Anyhow I’m happy 😃

EOS were brilliant all through the consultation/sales process and delivery. The skylight looks great and works a treat with the electronic switch. Their after-care support was also very helpful and patient when we mistakenly thought we had an issue. Would highly recommend them.

As a company we have used EOS for some time. We use the EOS Rooflight Flexi Lid product a lot and also the EOS Smoke Vent Rooflight AOV on our projects. We cannot fault the company for the service, communication and value for money.

The rooflights are a key feature externally of the property as they are prominent on the flat roof. They are angled by 15 degrees to allow the south facing sun to enter the house maximising natural light and also utilising any solar gain. The majority are triple glazed, with a couple of larger opening lights being double glazed. Internally they provide so much light and the light shafts are a characteristic of the internal architecture given that there are 15 within the house. The ordering and supply process was straightforward and installing them worked well with the pre-made upstands. All in all a very satisfactory and successful decision to select Eos rooflights.
