Wilton Place is a historic terraced townhouse in Belgravia, London, arranged over six storeys with a basement. Originally built in the 19th century, the property has undergone various extensions and refurbishments over the years, blending traditional architecture with modern additions. While these changes have expanded the home, some alterations were unsympathetically executed, leading to a need for a carefully considered renovation. This latest redevelopment aims to enhance the home’s vertical circulation, energy efficiency, and natural light while maintaining its historic charm. A key aspect of the renovation involves introducing large glazed elements to connect the living spaces to the rear garden. To achieve this, a series of walk-on rooflights were specified, bringing daylight into the lower ground floor while ensuring a seamless aesthetic in keeping with the conservation area.
Given the heritage status of the building and the need for modern performance, the project required rooflights that could deliver exceptional thermal efficiency, durability, and discreet design. The rooflights needed to be walk-on rated to provide a functional outdoor terrace while maximising daylight penetration into the lower levels. Additionally, the client sought a matching upstand solution to maintain a uniform appearance and simplify installation. EOS was selected for its ability to provide bespoke solutions tailored to both performance and heritage-sensitive aesthetics.
EOS supplied three walk-on external rooflights, each designed to integrate seamlessly into the terrace area. The first measured 1090mm x 2860mm, the second 720mm x 3820mm, and the third was a 1090mm circular unit. To ensure a consistent and high-performing installation, all three rooflights were supplied with matching bespoke upstands, providing improved airtightness and thermal performance. These upstands were engineered to enhance energy efficiency while offering a refined, discreet finish that complements the building’s architectural style.
By incorporating walk-on rooflights into the design, the project successfully maximised natural light within the lower ground floor, reducing reliance on artificial lighting and creating a bright, open living space. The high-spec glazing and bespoke upstands ensure superior insulation, improving energy efficiency in line with 21st-century living standards. The sleek, flush-glazed design of the walk-on units maintains the clean, modern aesthetic of the terrace while respecting the heritage character of the property. The walk-on capability allows the terrace to remain fully usable while still serving as a daylight source for the spaces below.
Wilton Place exemplifies how modern glazing solutions can be harmoniously integrated into historic properties to enhance both aesthetics and performance. By providing bespoke walk-on rooflights with matching upstands, EOS played a crucial role in ensuring the success of this elegant and functional renovation.
