The Climate Innovation District in Leeds is redefining urban living by integrating sustainability, innovative architecture, and community-driven design. Developed by Citu, this forward-thinking neighbourhood prioritises energy efficiency, green spaces, and pedestrian-friendly streets, creating an environment where residents can connect with nature while enjoying the convenience of city life.
Located on the banks of the River Aire, the district offers a blend of modern living and sustainability, with homes designed to minimise environmental impact while maximising comfort and efficiency. The development features high-performance materials and cutting-edge technologies to support an eco-friendly lifestyle.
For this phase of the project, Citu had stringent performance requirements for the rooflights. They needed a system that could achieve outstanding thermal efficiency, with U-values below 0.7, while also incorporating ventilation within a modular design. The challenge was to provide a high-performance solution within budget while maintaining the sleek, modern aesthetic of the development.
Additionally, Citu required a rooflight with an unusually high 500mm insulated upstand to meet their structural and thermal performance criteria. Given the specific requirements and technical complexity, finding a supplier capable of delivering a solution that met all these criteria was a challenge. EOS was selected for its expertise in modular rooflight systems, precision engineering, and ability to provide tailored solutions that met both aesthetic and performance expectations.
EOS supplied and delivered a 3,675mm x 955mm triple-glazed modular rooflight, designed to meet the district’s strict energy efficiency targets. To achieve the required U-value of under 0.7, the rooflight incorporated advanced triple-glazing with solar control glass, ensuring optimal thermal performance while reducing solar gain.
A key requirement was the integration of ventilation without compromising the sleek, flush design of the modular system. EOS provided a smart solution by incorporating a 1m x 1m opening section within the larger fixed unit, maintaining a uniform appearance while enabling natural ventilation.
Another unique element of this project was the 500mm insulated upstand, which was engineered to enhance thermal performance and provide additional structural support. EOS’s ability to deliver a prefabricated, high-performance upstand simplified the installation process, ensuring airtightness and minimising thermal bridging.
The modular nature of the EOS system meant that both the fixed and opening elements sat flush, maintaining the clean, contemporary aesthetic that Citu required. The high-performance glass specification and precision-engineered upstand ensured the rooflight met the project’s sustainability and efficiency goals.
The Climate Innovation District showcases how modern architecture and sustainability can coexist, and EOS was proud to contribute to this vision with a bespoke rooflight solution. By combining cutting-edge glazing technology, precision engineering, and a modular approach, EOS delivered a system that not only met but exceeded the project’s performance expectations.
