The Bute Street development in Cardiff is set to redefine community living with the creation of 45 one-bedroom older-person flats, a flexible active space, and a community sporting facility. This ambitious redevelopment, led by local authorities as part of Cardiff Council’s Older Persons Housing Strategy, transforms a once-industrial landscape into a sustainable urban neighbourhood. With a focus on eco-friendly living through a Fabric First Approach and advanced energy systems like ground source heat pumps and electric storage heaters, the project aims to deliver SAP A-rated homes that reduce energy consumption and tackle fuel poverty, all while fostering a strong sense of community and connection to nature.
As the design evolved, the architectural team faced the challenge of specifying rooflights that would seamlessly integrate with the building’s modern and heritage elements while meeting strict performance criteria. The rooflights, envisioned as louvres with automatic activation options, needed to be available in both fixed and operational configurations. Detailed drawings specified large modular units for the communal and amenity spaces, with dimensions such as 3315mm x 2539mm and 4814mm x 1714mm for bespoke louvre boxes. With the requirement for a high-quality finish in RAL 7016, and the need to support energy efficiency and weatherproofing, finding a supplier capable of delivering such precise and bespoke products was paramount.
EOS rose to the challenge by delivering a fully bespoke solution for the Bute Street project. We supplied nine modular louvre boxes, each designed to fit a structural opening of 3315mm x 2539mm, featuring three panels per unit, and one additional modular louvre box measuring 4814mm x 1714mm with four panels. Our bespoke systems not only met the specification for both fixed and automatic louvre options but also provided the flexibility required for this complex, community-focused development. By offering the option to supply the rooflights with either automatic activation or as fixed units, we ensured the design accommodated the architects’ and contractors’ needs, while maintaining a high standard of thermal performance and aesthetic appeal.
The installation of our bespoke louvre rooflights has significantly contributed to the overall vision of the Bute Street development. Our modular design allowed for precise integration into the building’s fabric, enhancing the flow of natural light throughout the communal areas and individual flats. The high-performance glazing and robust aluminium frames, finished in RAL 7016, have elevated the design aesthetic while meeting stringent energy efficiency requirements. This solution not only supports the project’s sustainability goals but also creates a vibrant, connected environment that enriches community living.
The Bute Street project stands as a testament to the successful fusion of traditional architecture with modern, energy-efficient solutions. Through our tailored louvre rooflights, EOS has played a crucial role in enhancing the building’s aesthetic, thermal performance, and overall functionality.
